Featherless Hens Get Rescued From Commercial Cages

Have you ever been asked about how you prefer your eggs?

For Belle & Fleur, they like to have their eggs from hens who are not kept in cages.

Haidy Mansfield, the woman who is dedicating her life to rescuing caged chickens and rehoming them, started Belle & Fleur when she and her partner decided to rehome some hens to have their own steady supply of eggs, to be more self-sufficient. But the hens that they were able to rehome happened to come from commercial cages.

The chickens were in rough shape. Fleur had been trampled at the bottom of a crate and had almost no feathers left. Belle, Haidy said, was nearly dead. Both made a dramatic transformation after being properly cared for.

She said in an interview that she fell in love with the hens the more she watched them grow into proper chickens. “Scratching, exploring the garden, looking for bugs, preening, stretching their wings, flapping, and starting to grow feathers…I just thought it’s so wrong that an animal can end up looking like that because of a commercial practice,” Haidy said.

In a video from The Dodo, we can see Fleur’s journey from when she was first rescued. Haidy said that Fleur, a rescued commercial hen that was found squashed at the bottom of a crate, had barely any feathers, but she was very proud of the ones that she did have. Watch the video below.

In a recent video posted in their Tiktok and Facebook page, Belle and Fleur say NO to caged hens for Eggs UK. They looked back on Fleur and how she was able to change their lives and started their fight against the unethical practices caged hens suffer from. They described how broken Fleur had been when she was first found. “The most broken little life I had seen 💔 But boy did she have spirit,” Haidy said in the post.

With the organization’s efforts to rescue and rehome hens, we can see that there is hope for these animals. Their Instagram page showed how Belle, the other hen that was rescued alongside Fleur, made an incredible transformation from being “pretty much dead” to being a healthy hen in just 5 weeks of intensive care and a lot of love.

Although not everyone can survive the deplorable conditions some animals are raised in, with the love and care that Belle & Fleur is providing, their lives can get extended and improved. Even those who don’t make it can pass on peacefully, loved and cared for.
