Pope Francis is popular among even the world’s nonreligious for his humanitarian concerns. And after his speech to Congress yesterday, he wowed people again by turning down lunch with politicians to eat with the homeless.
The lunch took place at St. Maria’s meals, a Catholic charity in Washington D.C. that strives to feed immigrants, victims of abuse, mental illness sufferers, and the homeless. The pope, however, wasn’t able to eat the chicken pasta salad that was served; he was too busy chatting, blessing, and posing for selfies with the 300 other attendees!
He also gave a speech before the meal, condemning society for allowing homelessness to exist:
I want to be very clear. We can’t find any social or moral justification, no justification whatsoever for lack of housing. We know that Jesus wanted to show solidarity with every person. He wanted everyone to experience his companionship, his help, and his love. He identified with all those who suffer, who weep, who suffer any kind of injustice. He tells us this clearly, ‘I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me.’
Pope Francis is well-known for putting messages like this into practice. He is the driving force behind the homeless shelter that’s being built in Rome, as well as the shower facilities that already exist in St. Peter’s Square.
Overall, his incredible humility and desire to reach out to the marginalized is a breath of fresh air for many people. It will be exciting to see what he will do for the impoverished in the future!Whizzco
