Love Is Love Is Love Is Love Is Love: The Tony Awards Speech That Brought Us To Tears

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the genius behind the musical “Hamilton,” gave an acceptance speech at the 2016 Tony Awards that has resonated profoundly with people around the world. The show garnered 16 nominations, and Miranda accepted the award for Best Score. He didn’t give just any acceptance speech though; he performed an original sonnet that he’d written. The awards ceremony came on the heels of the senseless Orlando massacre that took place early in the morning on June 12, 2016. In his speech, Miranda paid tribute to the lives lost, and urged us to remember to live in love.

Watch his emotional speech in this video, and share the message that he’s sending. The world can always use more love, more understanding, and more acceptance.

The sonnet is written out in its entirety beneath the video. Take a look.

“Now fill the world with music, love, and pride.”

“My wife’s the reason anything gets done

She nudges me towards promise by degrees

She is a perfect symphony of one,

Our son is her most beautiful reprise.

We chase the melodies that seem to find us

Until they’re finished songs and start to play

When senseless acts of tragedy remind us

That nothing here is promised, not one day

This show is proof that history remembers

We live through times when hate and fear seem stronger

We rise and fall and light from dying embers

Remembrances that hope and love lasts longer

And love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love

Cannot be killed or swept aside,

I sing Vanessa’s symphony, Eliza tells her story

Now fill the world with music love and pride.”
