Being homeless is a reality for far too many people in this world. This includes LaShenda Williams, who was living in a grocery store parking lot. The Kroger grocery store where she was staying became home for her in a very special way.
Unfortunately, LaShenda was in a very difficult situation and wasn’t sure how to turn things around. Things started to change, however, when she went inside of Kroger to get something to eat. A woman by the name of Jackie Vandal ran into her, and it made a difference. Jackie is the hiring manager at Kroger, and they were having a job fair at the time. She encouraged LaShenda to apply for a job.
After the job application was filled out, Vandal said that she was hired. She didn’t know that LaShenda had been living in her car. The only thing that she knew is that the woman was having a difficult time and she knew that she needed help.
In the end, it ended up being a great decision for both women. Vandal shared with Good Morning America that she is a “fantastic, cheerful employee. She is a fantastic worker. I wish I had 120 of her.”
Verlenteez Williams is a customer who was in the store and found out that LaShenda had recently moved into an apartment. It was a step in the right direction, but the apartment still needed to be furnished. Verlenteez decided that he would help her get started by providing some furnishings. He also put a post on the East Nashville Facebook page to check for additional donations in the community.
What started out as a hopeful situation looking for a few chairs turned out to be much more. “It was an outpouring of over 200 people and people are still trying to donate,” they said to Good Morning America. LaShenda is now set up with everything she needs.
LaShenda has received a lot of love from the community and from Kroger. You can watch more about her and her situation, as well as how it turned out in the following video:
