Azal “Mary” Saleh, left, and Muna Ahmed are childhood friends from Baghdad, Iraq. They were separated by the war in their country. Years later they have been reunited by chance as students at Covenant House Academy in Grand Rapids, Mich. It’s actually the third time they have had a chance to be together as best friends. They both came to Grand Rapids in 2010, but Ahmed’s family returned to Iraq after her mother’s brother was killed in a bombing. With the continuing violence and her inability to attend school, however, Ahmed’s father decided to return to the US. By chance, Ahmed attended the same school as Saleh and they quickly renewed their friendship and are setting their sights on finishing high school and moving on to college. We wish them a lifetime of friendship together!
