Helping Those in Need: How to Support Americans Affected by Natural Disasters

Natural disasters, such as hurricanes and tornadoes, can have a devastating impact on communities in southern states. These events can cause widespread damage to homes and businesses, as well as knock out power grids and disrupt access to critical services. For residents of southern states, the challenges associated with these disasters can be especially difficult to overcome.

One of the most pressing challenges that residents of southern states face during natural disasters is power outages. According to the Department of State, hurricanes and tornadoes can cause widespread damage to power lines and infrastructure, leaving large numbers of people without electricity. This can be especially dangerous for those who rely on medical equipment that requires power, such as dialysis machines or oxygen tanks. In addition, power outages can also disrupt access to clean water and make it difficult to cook food, reports the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research.

“Our southernmost counties in our service area (Manatee, Highlands, and Hardee County) have been impacted the most from the storm,” reports our charitable partners at Feeding Tampa Bay. “We have been monitoring the effects of power outages across the region to help our agency network get stabilized. Due to the impacts from Hurricane Ian, we are assisting our Feeding America network food banks in the south (Harry Chapin and All Faiths) to ensure that they have the resources necessary to begin to stabilize the neighbors in their community-this includes resources such as MREs, water, prepared meals, grocery boxes, etc.”

Another significant challenge that people face during natural disasters is the loss of access to critical services. As FEMA reports, hospitals and emergency services can be shut down or overwhelmed during natural disasters, leaving people without access to medical care. Schools and other public buildings may also be closed, making it difficult for people to access food, shelter, and other basic needs.

Keta, a student and full-time single working mom of two beautiful girls, ages 5 and 11, said making ends meet is a constant challenge when living in an area that is prone to natural disaster.

“I grew up dealing with food insecurity and unfortunately continue to face similar setbacks as an adult,” Keta said. “I’m grateful to have access to local food pantries and friendly neighbors-they help my little family get by. It’s a constant fear not knowing where my next meal will come from, and I work hard to stay healthy and provide for my girls so that they don’t have to worry about that. But I don’t just want to teach my girls to accept a hand out. I want them to know how good it feels to give back too! Once a month I cook a meal to share with my neighbors. I have seen first hand the impact food relief can have on a struggling population and hope to start a soup kitchen someday.”
